Adult ADHD and Autism Assessments – Right to Choose

If you are an adult and worried you may have symptoms of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or autism (autistic spectrum disorder), you can request a GP appointment via our website or contact Reception on 0121 628 2345. During the consultation, you will be asked about your symptoms, and may be sent a questionnaire to complete afterwards. If your answers fulfil the referral criteria, you may then wish to be referred for an ADHD or autism assessment.

Unfortunately, the waiting time for an appointment with the NHS ADHD or autism assessment services can be very long. However, there are a range of approved alternative providers who offer ADHD or autism assessment on behalf of the NHS, who may offer appointments sooner than the NHS assessment services. You have the ‘Right to Choose’ one of these service provider if you wish, and your assessment would still be free of charge.

For information on the range of approved ADHD assessment services, visit ADHD UK. You can find autism assessment providers via the National Autistic Society Autism Services Directory by entering your postcode and searching for ‘diagnosticians’. You will need to contact a provider individually to find out if they are approved to provide an assessment on behalf of the NHS, and can offer the ‘Right to Choose’. Once you have chosen your preferred provider, let Reception know so your GP can refer you.

If you are a child, or worried about a child, who may have symptoms of ADHD or autism, you should contact the school, as they are best able to make a referral if needed.

Earwax Removal

Earwax is normally present inside the ear canals, and provides an important protective function. It usually falls out naturally, but can sometimes build up and block the ear, causing symptoms such as hearing loss, earache, a feeling of blocked ears, ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus) or vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick).

Earwax blockage can be treated with an olive oil spray (e.g. Earol) or olive drops once or twice daily for a week, which can be purchased from a pharmacy or online.

If the ears remain blocked after using olive oil, the next step is to consider ear wax removal via ear syringing or microsuction. Private appointments for ear wax removal are widely available, with prices usually ranging from £35-60:

Aston University offers a FREE ear wax removal service at Aston Hearing Clinic, provided by students under the close supervision of experienced practitioners. To book, email m.whitehouse@aston.ac.uk

Difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep can cause health problems such as low mood, irritability and difficulty concentrating, and can even affect relationships and social life if sleep problems are longer-term.

Good sleep habits, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, (sometimes called ‘sleep hygiene’) can help improve sleep. Practicing mindfulness or self-help CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) techniques can also aid sleep by lifting your mood, easing anxiety and helping you manage stress.

Dental Problems

A dental abscess is a collection of pus that can form inside the teeth, in the gums, or in the bone that holds the teeth in place. It’s caused by a bacterial infection.

Dental abscesses are often painful, but aren’t always. In either case, they should be looked at by a dentist.

It’s important to get help as soon as possible, because abscesses don’t go away on their own. They can sometimes spread to other parts of the body and make you ill.
See a dentist if you have toothache that lasts more than 2 days. There are things you can do to ease it while you wait for an appointment.
